Around the world, more people are beginning to show interest in running for health. A few do marathons, but many more, of all ages compete in a fun run – usually a 5 km or 10 km walk or run, or a bike ride. It has become an accepted way to raise a lot of money for charity – people pay to compete, and sometimes also collect sponsors to raise more money. While the idea has been around for a long time (The Great Victorian Bike Ride), it has recently become more popular to participate in group runs or walks, with the whole family, or with a group, (Wings For Life ) or workplace event. The idea is to involve people who may not be serious fitness competitors, but who want a higher level of personal fitness than they have at the moment. Hopefully people spend time training for the event, and then continue walking or running after the event.
